Aging Parent? Tips to Help Them Live Independently as Long as They Want

April 1, 2015 by Anita Ginsburg 1 Comment

You want your parents to have the best life possible as they age. Fortunately, you can take steps that will help them to maintain an independent lifestyle. You should know about several tips to help your aging parents live independently as long as they want.

Add safety features to the home

The first tip is to add safety features to the home. Install grab bars in bathrooms, stair lifts and motion-activated lights.

Label things like stove and shower knobs clearly. Consider installing a zero-clearance shower. Lower the height of cabinet knobs to make life easier.

Take advantage of technology

Take advantage of as much technology as possible. Get your aging parents wireless medical alert devices. Give them easy-to-use cell phones to stay in touch. Consider setting up a laptop with a camera so they can be social with family and friends without having to travel long distances.

There are even timers and other devices to help manage medication times.

Consider part-time caregivers

Consider scheduling a part-time caregiver for a couple of hours a few days every week. A caregiver will check on your parents and provide companionship in some cases. The professional is trained and can take vital signs, drive your parents around to shop or help with light housework. This can make a real difference.

Have essential items delivered to the home

Think about having essential items such as toiletries, medications and food delivered right to the home. This allows your parents to live independently without worrying about making long trips to a grocery store or drug store. Your parents will be happier and more independent with this service.

Create a plan to take care of medical needs

Have a plan in place to deal with the medical needs of your aging parents. Have a plan to get them to doctor appointments or treatment centers so they do not have to worry or take risks. Create an emergency plan. This allows your parents to enjoy life instead of worrying about getting to a hospital.

Consider a senior living community

If your parents no longer want to live at home, they can be independent in a place like Sunshine Retirement senior homes. These are similar to apartment complexes, except your parents have access to many services, activities and events. A senior living community can allow your parents to live independently or far as long as they want.

Independence for your parents is the freedom to do what they want whenever they want. This sometimes means providing extra support with caregivers or a senior living community. You can take action today to ensure your aging parents continue living independently for a long time.

    Hey!!
Aging comes with many new challenges and decisions. As housework and day-to-day tasks become harder, it is important to make the correct decision about the future of yourself or loved one. Going to stay with a relative is not an option for every senior and that is why all independent senior living options should be considered.
Thank you so much for great sharing.
