How to Create a Healthy Office Environment

August 1, 2014 by Ariel Bellamy Leave a Comment

Most of the people working in an office feel like they are being suffocated, and for a good reason too. Most offices are set up in a way that sucks out all the creative juices from workers, and you, as an office habitant, do not feel relaxed or comfortable working.

In order to be more efficient and perform well in an office, it has to be crafted in a way that will make you feel safe and the environment will not be unhealthy.

Natural light is your friend

Perhaps the biggest flaw that offices have is that they lack windows. If you do not have enough sources of natural light, you will feel confined and trapped, which will result in an extremely unhealthy environment.

An office needs natural light as it will help your body’s biological clock running on time. It will help with the body’s regulatory processes. Furthermore, if it is possible, try to take as many breaks as possible outside, in the open, so that you can get a fair share of sunlight and fresh air into your system.

Plants are not only for decoration

Feng shui and other similar sciences have shown that plants help reduce stress and also add a nice touch to any office. It is important to choose the right plant though. Unless you have a green thumb, opt for indoor plants which are easy to take care of and will not wither away fast.

Ergonomics is key

Affordable furniture does not necessarily always mean that they are comfortable or ergonomic. It is important that the company spends a little bit of extra on ergonomic chairs and office furniture as most employees will spend their time bound to those chairs.

If the employees do not feel comfortable, then their performance will also drop drastically. Commercial furniture and industrial furniture might offer great deals when buying in bulk, but it is not always about budget. Think of what would feel better and more comfortable if you were sitting in those throughout the whole day.

Snacks should be healthy

Healthy snacks can involve coffee and tea, and it would be advisable and recommended that your employees should take frequent breaks, with access to healthy snacks because those can reduce stress and nervousness.

Remember to take everything in moderation. This is vital to keep a healthy balance and to be most productive. Do not go overboard. Too many breaks can break concentration, and if you develop it as a habit, it will be extremely hard to get back into line to work.

Healthy activities

Encourage employees to engage in healthy activities whenever possible, and instead of traditional brainstorming sessions. They will feel rejuvenated and ready to contribute. It is a good idea to introduce a lounge room where they can unwind and perhaps find the answer they are searching for.

Moreover, if your company organizes competitions and activities that will involve all the employees, you will raise the overall performance levels. On the other hand, if the work days are getting really tough, healthy activities will help the employees unwind and show them that the company cares about its workers.
