4 Reasons Moms Should Go Back To School This Year

March 6, 2013 by CMO Contributor 4 Comments

Are you a mom who has been recently contemplating possibly going back to school? If so, then this article is for you. Maybe you’re thinking about going back, but not sure if now is the right time or if you have the required energy and time for it. Or perhaps you don’t know what to go back for.

There are many reasons to go back to school, and below we discuss a few ideas that might get the wheels turning for you on the topic. Depending on your career choice and previous education, going back to school might be a boon for you, your income and career level.

Whether you’re going for an advanced MBA degree, finishing up your Bachelor’s or going for the first time – below are four reasons moms should go back to school this year. If you find this article helpful, please share it on social media.

1.  Higher Income

Without a doubt, one of the best things about going back to school is the real possibility of increasing your income. When you increase your skill set, you can then gain the confidence needed to ask for a raise at your current place of employment or you can branch out and apply elsewhere with gaining more benefits, perks and of course – a higher salary.

It doesn’t matter if the increase is a large sum up front, a gradual amount over the year or a huge sign-on bonus – what matters is that your education helped facilitate the change in the first place.

2. Better Job Satisfaction

With a targeted education, meaning one that you carefully craft yourself for the career you want, comes the added benefit of better job satisfaction. If you have the job you want and are quite good at it, this brings about a deep sense of accomplishment and fulfillment.

For example, perhaps now you’re a skilled nurse in a pediatric ward but after going back to school and finishing up an advanced degree, you can now move up the ladder to the position of ER nurse which pays more and also makes you feel more accomplished.

3. Early Retirement

If your specialized education moves you up not one but several ladder notches, then your road to retirement just got shorter. Instead of retiring at 65 like most, you might be able to retire at 60 or younger. This all depends on your chosen career field and your choice of a strategic education plan. The more strategic and cohesive your plan, the better your efforts will accelerate the track.

4. More Family Time, In The Long Run

It may seem at first that going back to school is only going to make you busier, and yes, this is true. However, if you think long term, then you’ll know that once all is said and done and you have your degree, you’ll have plenty of choices on what direction to take. And most likely, this will include choosing a position (and company) that complements your lifestyle.

Perhaps at company A, you’ll have the option to telecommute and work from home (don’t pick Yahoo) and company B allows flex time and is quite generous with their vacation time. Since you will be in demand, you will be able to call the shots. Congrats! and enjoy the extra time with your family that you have rightfully earned.

As you can see, there are many good reasons to go back to school as a mom, and now is as good a time as any. Look up local schools in your area, give them a call or visit and see what they can do for you. All of the above is waiting for you – when you do decide to take the plunge.

Agree ako sa tiyaga-tiyaga lang, Mon. Actually, everything is “tiyaga-tiyaga lang.” Perseverance can go a long way, indeed.
