Working from Home: 6 Tips for Staying Focused

November 1, 2013 by CMO Contributor 2 Comments

When most people think of working from home, they imagine sleeping in, working in pajamas and avoiding the dreaded morning commute. While working from home definitely has its benefits, many people find it hard to stay on task. Here are some tips on how to stay focused throughout the day.

Be prepared

From paperclips to printing supplies, ensuring you have all of the supplies you need before you begin your work day can really help you stay on track. If you have to stop to look for supplies or find more information on what type of ink your printer needs, your focus and productivity may suffer.

When you do not properly prepare for your work day, you may frequently be interrupted as you stop to search for things. These interruptions can drastically decrease your productivity.

Be realistic

Whether you telecommute to an office or you work at home full-time, it is important to be realistic with yourself about your work habits.

Some people can sleep late in the morning and make up for it by working later in the evening. Others may not be disciplined enough to make this work. Knowing yourself and your habits is key to helping you know how you will be able to work from home.

Create an office space

Although it may be tempting to work from the comfort of your favorite couch, try to avoid getting too relaxed. In fact, you can skip temptation entirely by simply designating an office space within your home.

While an actual space dedicated solely to your work may be ideal, you can also repurpose any space you have available. Examples of alternative office spaces include kitchen tables, empty closets or an unoccupied corner in your home.

Turn off the TV

As exciting as your favorite daytime talk show may be, you want to avoid anything that can distract you from your work. Instead of working with your television in the background, try using it to reward yourself for completing your work ahead of schedule.

Eat healthy snacks

Eating healthy meals and snacks can help you stay alert and focused when working from home. Instead of sugary toaster pastries or donuts, consider items like low-fat yogurt, whole grain cereals or oatmeal.

Take breaks

While this may be counter-intuitive, taking regular breaks can help you stay on task throughout the day. They allow your mind to stay fresh and ready to take on whatever you have ahead of you.

Working from home can be rewarding and challenging at the same time. Following these six tips will have you on your way to being more focused and productive in no time.
