5 Smart Ways to Choose Your Roof Color

June 27, 2014 by Karleia Steiner Leave a Comment

Choosing a roof color seems simple because the majority of roofs are neutral colors. However, if a homeowner does not choose carefully, he or she may inadvertently pick a color that clashes with the house and that they will regret for years.

These five smart tips will give homeowners a place to start, whether they are building a new home or replacing an old roof.

Consider neutral colors

Neutral colors are found on a majority of homes in most neighborhoods.

Although homeowners may want to pick a daring color, such as blue or red, these colors may decrease resale value because they are not everyone’s favorites. Roofs make a huge statement from the curb.

Look in daylight

Roof colors can look much different under fluorescent lights than they do in outdoor conditions. In fact, colors can even look different in the sun versus the shade. Homeowners should take a sample of the roofing material home and match it to their siding, brick, shutters, doors and gutters.

Choose a complementary color

Homeowners should stay away from roofing that is almost the same hue as the siding or the brick of the home. Breaking up the colors will add interest to the home and make the home appear larger. A contrasting color that matches with a feature, such as a door or the shutters, will create a trendy look.

Consider the home’s architecture

Most houses look best with traditional multicolored asphalt shingles. However, some homes are designed for particular materials that come in traditional hues. Examples include gray shake roofs for beach cottages and red tiles for Mediterranean-style homes.

Keep the roof darker than the home

Dark roofs tend to ground the home. They also add the contrasting colors that increase curb appeal and draw attention to architectural details. Dark, non-patterned roofing often looks great with a wide variety of paint, siding or brick colors.

Because even neutral colors come in a variety of hues, choosing the right color of shingles, tiles or other material will most likely take more than one quick trip to a roofing store.

Professional roofing companies will provide expert consultations to make the decision-making process simple, as well as professional installation of a roof that will last for years.

Consult professionals like those at T. Simpson Roofing for your next home roofing project. With years of experience, this company is trusted by scores of customers throughout the area and can help any homeowner choose a roof that will increase resale value and look beautiful with the home’s architecture.
