Does Your Teen Need Rehab? 6 Signs You Should Notice

May 16, 2014 by Kara Masterson 1 Comment

Fifty percent of teenagers will try drugs or alcohol before they leave high school. A small percentage of teens who try drugs and alcohol will become addicts. The good news is that rehab can help a teenage addict.

Below are some of the signs that your teen needs rehab:

Mood changes

Alcohol and drugs can affect the neurotransmitters in the brain. That is why many teenagers who are using drugs or alcohol experience mood changes.

You may notice that your teen is anxious, depressed or irritable.

Problems in school

Teenagers who abuse drugs and alcohol are less likely to take pride in their school work, and their grades may drop. Keep in mind that a small change in grades may not necessarily indicate a serious problem.

However, pay close attention if your teenager has always done well in school and his or her grades start dropping drastically.

Changes in behavior

Many teens who are addicted to drugs or alcohol will lose interest in their favorite hobbies. They may also sleep more or less than usual. It is also common for an addict to have a change in eating patterns.

Changes in appearance

Many people who are using drugs or alcohol will have a drastic change in appearance. For example, they may lose a lot of weight and have blood shot or glazed eyes. They may also begin to neglect their physical appearance.

Lying

Most people who have an addiction are not going to admit to their family members and friends that they have a problem. They believe that they can stop any time that they want. That is why they often lie to their loved ones.

Health issues

Over time, drug and alcohol abuse will begin to affect a person’s health. Drug and alcohol use can cause vomiting, frequent sickness, nosebleeds and headaches. You should contact your teen’s doctor if you think those symptoms are caused by drug or alcohol use.

Drugs and alcohol can ruin a teenager’s life. Fortunately, teens who go to rehab or alcohol treatment centers are more likely to get back on the right track. However, it is important for teens to get help early.

Mood changes, lying, health issues, changes in behavior and physical appearance and problems in school are some of the signs that suggest your teen may need to go to rehab.
