Driving Isn’t That Hard: 4 Tips to Become a Better Driver

May 15, 2014 by Karleia Steiner 1 Comment

What makes a good driver? With so many different types of cars, trucks, motorcycles and bikes on the road, it can be a challenge to understand the mechanics behind safe driving.

The following four tips should help you get a better understanding of your car, the road, and the tools you need to be a safe driver.

Learn about your car

The first thing any driver needs to master is their car. It does not matter if it is an old car, a hybrid, or a new sports car.

Each automobile has different characteristics. The way the car turns, how it reacts in rainy weather, how quickly it brakes and accelerates, and its rear view mirrors must be mastered before you can drive long distances.

Take the car to a spacious parking lot early in the morning and practice braking quickly, accelerating away, making left and right turns, and parallel parking.

Look beyond the first car

Drivers have a tendency to be fixated on the car right in front of them. While that may be okay on a freeway, where everyone is going in a straight line at the same speed, it is dangerous on regular roads. Keep an eye out for what is happening 200 or 500 meters in front.

This will ensure that you avoid pedestrians, are aware of turning cars up ahead, and are fully equipped to maneuver away from a potential accident.

Take responsibility

Too many drivers have tunnel vision when they are driving. Their attention and thoughts are focused on their destination, what they are going to do next, and other things on their mind. It is important for drivers to assume responsibility not just for themselves, but for others.

For example, if you are driving through an area where school children are walking home, or shoppers are going from the grocery store to a parking lot, you need to anticipate their movements while driving.

This will ensure smooth passage through tricky areas, instead of a stop-start driving style that tries to accommodate others.

Remain calm

Road rage and anxiety can be the greatest cause of unnecessary accidents. If a car makes a movement you do not expect, or a pedestrian looks to be walking right in front of you, take a deep breath or two, think logically about your next move, and then execute.

Moving your steering wheel or pressing on the brake in a panicked motion will only cause more problems.

If you end up in an accident, there are a few things you can do to help yourself. The best is to find a lawyer who specializes in vehicle accidents who can help you in your case.

Finding a great law firm with a good reputation will make a huge difference in how your case is handled.

Being a safe driver is not as hard as it seems. As long as you are comfortable with your car, aware of others, and conscious of your responsibilities on the road, there is a great chance that you will avoid an accident every time you drive.

Consult a professional injury law firm like Bronson Jones Co. if you have been involved in an auto accident.
