How to Balance School and a Full-Time Job

December 11, 2013 by CMO Contributor Leave a Comment

It is difficult trying to juggle a full-time job as well as an education. If you are putting 40 hours a week in at work while also putting in 15 hours in the classroom, how do you find time to ensure that you are giving 100 percent in both areas?

Take your classes online

By going to school online, you can do your school work when it is convenient for you. This gives you time to relax after work or go out with friends before you watch a lecture or take a test. It is much easier to pursue your degree when you have a clear head.

Try to work a consistent schedule at work

If possible, try to get a set shift at work. If that is not possible, try to get a schedule that is relatively predictable. For example, you could try to get every Sunday off while you are in school or keep at least one night a week free to concentrate on school if you can’t work a set shift each week.

Get enough sleep

It is critical that you get enough sleep each night. You should be aiming to get seven hours each night to ensure maximum productivity the next day. If you go out with friends, make sure to keep the drinking to a minimum. Alcohol inhibits your ability to get a full night’s rest.

Time management skills are a must

You have to learn how to manage your time carefully. On some days, you may need to use your lunch break as a time to watch videos or interact with students online. Instead of watching TV after work, you may need to finish your paper or concentrate on other class-related activities that need to be finished.

When you have many commitments taking up your time, you need to learn how to maximize every minute of your day.

Don’t be afraid to say “no”

There may come a time when you simply cannot handle an extra assignment or work or spend time going out with friends. You have to be able to say “no” every so often when you need to get a paper done or finish an assignment for school.

Having a full-time job while going to school at the same time can be difficult. The key is to manage your time well, take classes online and get enough sleep each night. If you can do that, you will find it easier than you think to manage both commitments.
