How to Prep Your Backyard for Months of Summer Fun

April 28, 2014 by Anica Oaks Leave a Comment

With the approach of warmer weather, many homeowners are thinking about ways to tidy up the yard in preparation for summer fun. Creating an attractive and welcoming outdoor environment sets the stage for good times and happy memories that will last throughout the year.

Tree trimming

The first thing you should tackle is an assessment of the trees that already exist in your yard. They may have gone through a hard winter with freeze or ice damage.

Remove any dead branches, and any branches that are low-hanging and might impede activities in the yard.

Trim back older branches into an attractive shape. Finally, give the trees in your yard some nutritional support for the growing season with high-quality tree food. Your local nursery can advise you on the right type of fertilizer for the trees in your region of the country.

Landscaping for privacy

Today, homeowners can choose from many different types of fencing, from natural wood to synthetic resins. A “natural fence” of planted shrubs can provide an attractive barrier at an inexpensive price that helps to shield your yard and reduce sound.

Using outdoor furniture

To make your backyard able to accommodate more people, consider adding outdoor furniture. There are many DIY options out there, as well as websites and stores that offer resilient outdoor furniture. Some materials that make for great outdoor furniture include plastic, wood, metal, and resin products.

Attractive bedding plants

Your next task should be setting beds of flowing plants to provide visual beauty for your guests. Small shrubs like rhododendron or azalea can be mixed with smaller plants like marigold, salvia, petunias and begonias for successive blooms throughout the summer months.

If you have a small yard, containers full of flowers can provide an attractive background for outdoor entertainment.

Set up your entertainment area

You may have a deck or patio that needs a bit of sprucing up after the winter months. Sweep off the dead leaves and debris. Give the deck a new coat of stain or scrub down the flagstones to provide an attractive area for eating, mingling and enjoying the warm summer evenings.

Ensure that landscape plants don’t encroach on people areas. Give outdoor furniture a new coat of paint or stain. Make sure your barbecue grill is ready for outdoor cooking.

Pool preparation

Have your pool professionally cleaned after winter to ensure a healthy swimming experience for your summer parties. Have pool equipment such as filter, heater and pumps. Restock pool testing and cleaning supplies. You can find professional pool maintenance in Minneapolis from companies like Kalifornia Pool and Spa or others in your specific area.

Outdoor lighting

Lantern lights, path lights, brick-style lights set into the ground, deck lights and rope lights can be used to suit the different areas of the yard to provide the right amount of light for every activity.

These measures will give your yard the pleasant, well-cared-for look that makes outdoor activities so special. See how easily you can improve the look of your property for summer fun with these simple actions.
