Thriving 30s: How to Make This the Healthiest Decade of Your Life

April 8, 2014 by CMO Contributor Leave a Comment

Welcome to the thirties, a wonderful decade!

We have got most of our family and career in a forward trajectory, but no time to sit on our laurels. Everyone says that the thirties are still a young time, but let’s face it, we don’t feel that same energy as we did in our twenties. There are some tips to help counteract this very natural issue, and make your thirties your best decade yet.

Run from old age

This one is no surprise to anyone, but exercise is the best energy booster and mood elevator. In addition, it keeps the ticker ticking correctly. The real trick is to find the right exercise for you: dancing, swimming, karate, or walking.

Finding a buddy to keep you accountable is a great way to make sure that you don’t short your weekly exercise. As you get older, you’ll be more prone to sports injuries, and you’ll have more aches and pains.

While you need to stay active, be careful about the types of exercise you participate in. If you have bad knees, running is not for you. If you have a bad back, yoga might be a great morning routine. Evaluate the stage that your body is currently at, and then you can  find a fun, safe form of exercise to help you boost your energy and mood.

Eat your greens

Those pounds are much more stubborn now than they used to be. Loads of trendy diets and quick fixes never cease to pop up, but remember that you may be trading calories for chemicals in some of those processed boxes.

Read the label and remember that a diet filled with a rainbow of colors straight from the ground is always good fuel for your beautiful body. The more natural foods you can eat, the better you feel. You’ll be able to keep your body free from toxins, and feeling lighter and healthier.

You might have been able to eat whatever you wanted in your twenties with no consequences, but your metabolism is probably starting to slow down. You’ll have to pay more attention to what you eat, and trade your late night snack of milk and cookies for celery sticks or apples.

Smile for the camera

For some reason, many adults don’t go to the dentist as frequently as they should—they hit an age where they don’t think they need to go to the dentist. It doesn’t matter how old you are, you need regular teeth cleanings, probably more so as you get older.

Your teeth will start to give away our age as our gums recede and teeth brown. Keep up with your regular dentist visits and oral hygiene. Ask about whitening options if you feel it is time. Your dentist may offer professional or over-the-counter solutions.

A brighter smile can make you feel confident and brighten your whole face even as you start to look older. A bright, healthy smile is something you will hold onto for years to come, so take are of your teeth through your thirties.

Hair tricks

There is never a time you feel so fresh and new as when you walk out of the salon. Hair is such a personal expression of your individual personality. However, the grays are creeping in and the shiny luster is not what it used to be.

Keeping your hair up to snuff is a way to keep people guessing about your age for decades. Whether you decide to color or not is your choice, but make sure that you have moisturized and trimmed your hair to keep it looking its best. It just feels good, too.

Thirties rock and we are just getting rolling, so don’t lust after youth. Stop longing for your twenties and make this the best decade of our life. Those who get into healthy habits in their thirties will be grateful in their forties, fifties, and beyond.

Don’t spend this decade thinking you’ll start getting healthy when you’re older. You are older. Treasure the body you have and take care of yourself. Otherwise, your next few decades might not be so fun. Embrace this stage of life and get ready to thrive in your thirties.
