Make Your Vision 20-20 by Following These 5 Practices

February 6, 2014 by CMO Contributor Leave a Comment

Eyesight is something that many people take for granted. We take the time to exercise our bodies, but many of us do not make an effort to take proper care of our eyes. Over time, eyesight can deteriorate as a result of this negligence.

Fortunately, there are some steps that anybody can take to improve their vision and the health of their eyes.

Wear sunglasses when needed

Just as the sun’s UV rays can be damaging to your skin, they can be damaging to your eyes as well. To protect your eyes from these rays, you should always wear sunglasses that are rated to protect against UV rays on particularly sunny days and especially while driving.

Keep the lights on

When using electronic devices such as computers and cell phones or while watching television, you can help save your eyesight by keeping the lights on. Looking at electronic devices in the dark is bad for your eyesight. The stark contrast between light and dark can be damaging to your eyes and is a leading cause of vision deterioration. You can also hurt your eyes by staring at something that is too close for too long.

Eat lots of carrots

Carrots are not only good for your overall health and well-being but are especially beneficial to the eyes as well. They come packed with vitamin A, which helps your eyes. Some other foods to consider eating more of include leafy vegetables, fish, and citrus fruits. These foods are high in vitamins and fatty acids that help maintain your eyesight.

Quit (or avoid) smoking

Studies have shown that cigarette smoke can be damaging to the eyes, so add that to your list of reasons to quit smoking. Smoking can lead to macular degeneration, as well as cataracts. Even being around second-hand smoke can cause severe damage to your eyes/eyesight.

If you are currently a smoker, quitting will allow your body to repair some of the damage that has been done to your eyes, lungs, and other parts of the body as well.

Visit an optometrist regularly

Just as it is important to visit your doctor and dentist regularly for checkups, you should do the same with your eyes. There are few kinds of specialized optometrists you can visit if you have problems with your eyes. For example, there are orthoptists that work with eye movement and behavioral optometrists that work with those that struggle with complicated visual information.

Ideally, you should visit a professional for a vision checkup or even consider LASIK surgery if your eyes are in need of some extra help. This will help to ensure that your eyes are in good shape and that you get corrective lenses if you need them.

As you can see, there are many ways to go about improving and maintaining your vision. Be sure to keep these simple tips in mind. You may be surprised at what a difference they can make in the quality of your eyesight in a relatively short period of time as well.
