If you are someone who is very passionate when it comes to computers and you love learning new things about upgrades, computer hardware, and just about anything that involves a computer, then a career in this industry might just be your ticket to success.

If you finally decide to pursue a computer career, finding a job won’t definitely be as hard. However, you can still benefit from some pointers from experts and seasoned professionals in the industry. These pointers will make your quest for employment not just a lot more fun and enjoyable but fruitful as well.

Familiarize yourself with the different operating systems.

It is imperative for someone who aspires to land a career in the computer industry to familiarize himself with the basics of all the operating systems. Although you might have your own opinion as to which operating system is the best, knowing how all of them works remains to be very important.

Knowing how to work around just one operating system will greatly affect your career growth by limiting your potential.

Get certified.

Even if you already know how something works, or have an idea how to work around a certain system, and already have years of experience to show off, it is still important that you get yourself certified by a trusted institution.

A certification is not only for bragging rights, but it is also able to tell your potential employer that you have legitimate knowledge of a particular system. Any respectable employer will always choose someone who has IT training certifications than those who do not.

Certifications are like your battle wounds. They tell the world what you have, what you went through and what you are capable of. So keep this in mind – get yourself certified. And although you may need to spend some cash in order to take certification tests, it will all be worth it when you land the job of your dreams.

Take up computer courses.

You probably know by now that if you would like a career in computers and/or the information technology industry, you must get a degree in computers, or at least take computer courses. Self-taught knowledge and experience are often insufficient if you are serious about pursuing a career in IT.

Computer courses will help you with expanding your knowledge base, as well as educating you with the latest developments in information technology. Yes, not all the classes will be exciting or will tap your interest since you probably already know the basics of spreadsheets, processors and many other programs.

However, understanding these software and programs deeper than their face value is still essential.

Continue to read.

Take time to read. Reading isn’t only a good exercise for your brain; it is also the perfect chance for you to broaden your knowledge. Go to your local bookstore, and there you will find all kinds of computer books that can aid you in your quest for more knowledge.

Consider investing in new hardware.

We all understand how frequent change comes to computers. Every day, a new software or hardware is introduced to the market, which prompts computer professionals to educate and update themselves with the latest developments.

Whether you are working as a software engineer or a PBX system operator, it is a must that you equip yourself with enough knowledge to allow you to perform your job well. Because remember, there are millions of other people who wouldn’t think twice to take your place, so do everything to keep it and prove that you deserve the position you currently hold.

This advice is too generic to be useful.

You should outline several common career tracks that are present within differently-sized IT departments in various companies.

For example, the role of “project manager” is found in a number of IT departments, but the holder of this role rarely needs to be familiar with many of the details that you’ve listed. They do, however, need to be exceptionally good at task-tracking, procedure management, and cross-team communication.

Of course there are other IT roles where your list of details would be helpful. A “system administrator” role definitely must understand key aspects of multiple operating systems. Similarly, a “help desk technician” role certainly can enhance her or his skills by obtaining a current and well-regarded technical certification.

Computers seems to an essential part of every man’s career nowadays. Out of your five suggestions, I am taking the last two.

I have been planning to take an IT program but my day-work is in conflict with it so I decided to do the self-study—a learning process that is slow and painful. However, it is better than doing nothing.

Thanks for reading and commenting, Jyppe. Indeed, work schedule can be a hindrance if you’ve got other plans. But I agree that taking baby steps towards the achievement of your goals is better than doing nothing. Good luck in your studies!
