Common injuries and illnesses in the workplace are caused by hazardous industrial conditions, unsafe practices, and exposure to dangerous chemicals. However, there are seven ways to avoid illnesses and injuries that could occur on the job.

General jobs – understanding the risks

Training programs increase awareness of possible dangers that are present on the job. Training also helps workers perform job activities safety and productively.

Though, if you are unsure about how a task should be performed, you must talk to your employer about the situation.

If a potential hazard is noticed, ensure that everyone is aware of the problem. In addition, file a report and inform your supervisor about the possible hazard.

Chemical jobs – ensure that the proper equipment is used

Certain jobs require specific lighting, ventilation, and safety gear from a reputable company. All equipment should be checked regularly, and every component must be thoroughly maintained.

Whenever harmful chemicals must be used on the job, wear goggles, gloves, safety glasses, and an apron. Employers usually provide training about the correct use of safety equipment. The course covers legal chemical usage methods and chemical documentation methods.

All chemicals that are available on the job must have warning labels prominently displayed. If a chemical accident occurs, everyone must wear shoes that have treads to prevent slips.

General jobs – get plenty of rest

The National Sleep Foundation reported that most people do not get the recommended amount of sleep. The foundation also stated that many industries in the U.S. are losing nearly $80 billion each year because of tiredness in the workplace.

Being tired on the job creates a risk to other workers when they perform activities that involve fast response and concentration. Experts estimated that tiredness causes 18 percent of injuries that occur on the job.

Warehouse jobs – never overexert yourself

Pulling, pushing, excessive lifting, or moving heavy objects may result to major injuries. The National Safety Council reports that improper lifting causes back strain, and it also causes overexertion of the lung and heart muscles.

If you lift objects properly, you will less likely suffer from wrist injuries, spinal injuries, elbow injuries, pulled muscles, or back stain.

Office jobs – avoid repetitive motion

Major injuries are caused by repeated strain and stress. If your job requires constant sitting for various hours, you must stand up and stretch every hour. In addition, place your equipment, tools, and material at a comfortable reaching distance so that you can maintain proper posture.

If you type a lot on your job, take a break each hour to prevent carpal tunnel syndrome.

Driving jobs – be careful while traveling

When driving a company vehicle, never take personal cellphone calls or multitask. Instead, focus on the highway and other cars on the road. Also, never drive without getting sufficient sleep.

Electrical jobs – avoid electrical injuries

Always use the correct tool for each electrical job. When using electrical equipment, isolate each device from energy sources. To prevent major injuries, wear protective clothing and use insulated tools.
