Contemplating ways to protect your family, home and goods from fire requires ingenuity, practicality and thoughtfulness. Prioritizing what you can and can’t live without is never something easily considered, yet the threat of fire is an unfortunate reality.

Four ways that you can ensure that your family and material goods are protected includes:

  • knowing how to protect valuables
  • what materials withstand fire and what they actually protect
  • having an escape plan routine that everyone in the family knows
  • being on guard about the possibility of fire at all times

How to determine what valuables to protect

Making a deliberate decision about what to save in a fire will be different for everyone. The best way to approach this situation is by keeping precious items in near proximity so that they can be quickly gathered in the event of an emergency.

Protecting other valuables like vital records, photographs and digital information is best accomplished by scanning the documents and storing them in a cloud or similar technology so that they can be retrieved in the event originals are destroyed.

Fire readiness includes having items like a fire-proof safe from Dial Locksmith Ltd. and other companies that will allow documents and data to be protected at a fire-resistance rating, meaning a tested duration of time that such systems can withstand such high temperatures.

Materials that offer increased fire protection

Protecting a home and valuables from fire comes down to a combination of fire-fighting efforts and a direct correlation to safety materials purchased to help offset damage in the event of a fire.

Safes, for instance, that are built specifically for fire protection, are made from heavy duty materials and incorporate details like moisture pockets and double-wall construction that offer the greatest amount of protection. Being diligent about protecting the things that are the most important is all about buying time and creating as many lines of defense as possible.

Moreover, homes that are constructed with roofs made of composition, metal and tile for example, can save a home from burning to the ground through their ability to prevent embers from catching the entire home on fire in a short period of time.

The escape plan

A fire escape plan isn’t just for getting out of a burning home, it can mean the difference in successfully leaving an entire area that has been set ablaze. Always have two ways out. The U.S. Fire Administration emphasizes the dangers of smoke exposure and how crucial it is to survival to “get out, and stay out.”

Defense: How to ensure protection

Surrounding a home with defensible, clear space is another excellent strategy for protecting your family, home and goods from fire. Referred to as the “home ignition zone,” clearing this area offers protection from wildfires through eliminating fuel and ignition dangers.

Experiencing loss from a fire might become reality. However, the extent of loss is something that can absolutely be controlled. Being diligent about ways to protect yourself and taking the initiative to invest in them may not only save an exorbitant amount of monetary heartache, it can save your life.
