Removing Aggression and Tension: 5 Family Activities to Help Keep Stress from the Home

June 4, 2014 by Kandace Heller Leave a Comment

Family life can cause a variety of strains that accumulate over time. Work demands, school demands and personality conflicts can make home life feel like a battlefield. Fortunately, family members can find a number of ways to work off the aggression and tension that builds up.

#1. Wii game night

When the family is stuck indoors during the long winter, you can still find ways to work off energy and relieve stressful conflicts.

A Wii game console can provide a variety of competitive activities to allow family members to burn energy and put aside differences.

#2. Canoe or kayak trip

A good way to get families to work together and forget conflicts is to engage in some outdoor activity that expends their energy and requires them to work together.

A canoe or kayak trip on a nearby waterway can help to create an event that family members will remember for years. The mistakes and adventures along the way will all be part of the fun that keeps them active and interested, instead of fighting and being resentful.

#3. Active and competitive games

Competition is a healthy way to expend aggressive tendencies in an organized and healthy activity. Playing touch football, softball or tennis has always allowed family members to work off their energy and aggressive tendencies in an approved way.

Paintball is a particularly enjoyable way to engage in vigorous competition in a completely safe environment. Airsoft guns provide the opportunity for family members on a given team to work and communicate effectively.

Tactical shotgun accessories can be used to add variety to the game. You, and your family, can bring friends and break up into opposing groups to make the activity even more enjoyable.

#4. Run for a cause

Community charitable events are a good way for the family to re-connect, forget about conflicts and work for the good of other people. Most communities have events to raise money for a variety of causes, including fighting cancer, helping those with autism, raising money for the humane society and other charities.

Engaging in these activities as a family can help to relieve tense relationships and increase a sense of community.

#5. Church activities

Engaging in church-related work is another ways to sublimate aggression and work off tension. These activities all reach toward higher goals, such as helping others, aiding spiritual practice and creating an environment where each individual is valued.

Bake sales, food drives, church-building  or improvement work, and organizing church socials can all provide stress-relieving activity with a positive attitude. Doing church work as a family can allow family members to put aside their individual conflicts and pull together for the greater good.

These activities can convert aggression into fun and tension into action. Try them with your children when you need to create a more positive family environment.
