My Daughter and Taylor Swift

October 23, 2011 by Maricel Rivera 4 Comments

My daughter adores, er, loves Taylor Swift. How do I know? Let me count the ways.

1. Taylor invasion of the hard drive.

There’s a huge collection of Taylor Swift pictures in my hard drive. Good thing I already had the drive upgraded. Otherwise, I might not have space left for my own files.

2. Taylor on YouTube.

I often see her going to YouTube to search for Taylor Swift videos. In the past, I have oftentimes told the kids not to watch too much YouTube on the computer, especially without permission from me or their father.

Why? Well, with a lot of information floating free on the Internet, I can never be too sure, right? Besides, mothers know best, don’t they?

Now before you come to the conclusion that I am one tyrant of a mother, Taylor Swift songs on YouTube are now allowed in our household, but only to a minimum.

3. Taylor on the keyboard.

Almost always, whenever she plays a tune on her keyboard – not the typewriting keyboard, the musical one – it’s a Taylor Swift song.

4. Taylor on Facebook.

On her Facebook account, her status oftentimes says, “Happy Swift day, everyone!” At one point, it said something to this effect, “I thank God for my family, my friends, my good health … and Taylor Swift!” And when asked what it was she most wanted, it was to watch a Taylor Swift concert live.

Last school year, when she graduated from elementary, she was all smiles when my sister, her hair stylist at the time, told her she would curl her naturally straight hair so she could look like Taylor Swift.

So really, who is Taylor Swift? As a mother, I need to know. Of course, I wouldn’t want my daughter idolizing somebody like this former Disney star turned alcoholic who had been in and out of jail for like the longest time already.

I would want my daughter to surround herself with a personality she can look up to, somebody who can be a good role model.

I did some digging on Taylor Swift and here’s some trivia tidbits I came up with: The singer is not just a record-breaking artist but a philanthropist as well. As it turned out, she was a victim of bullying in school and didn’t always seem to fit. Consequently, she turned to songwriting to express her emotions.

Now there may have been some not-so-good articles about her or some pictures that shouldn’t have found their place on the Internet, but some people just happen to have so much time in their hands.

So now that I kind of already have a glimpse of who Taylor Swift is, I think I’ll just have to take the backseat and hope that my daughter has already learned to, just like what I’ve been telling her over and over, choose the good and dump the bad things in the people she crosses paths with.

In case you want to know, before I had this article posted in this blog of mine, I made sure to seek my daughter’s approval.

So there.

@ Ralph … we, parents, can be headaches to our children sometimes, huh? Well, I hope they all realize we only want what’s best for them. 😀

News says that Taylor Swift donates 6,000 volumes of books to US library for children and young adults. Thumbs up to her advocacy to promote reading to teens who idolized her!

Now i’m already one of those who adore this talented and generous woman =)

@ EINz … thanks for stopping by … cool to have you here … you’re right, aside from being talented, she has a good soul. I also read somewhere that she turned her concert into a benefit concert when a tornado struck in the U.S. 😀
